Expert Speak

Kumar Rajagopalan

“There are some great days and some not so great days, but never a boring day. This summarises a career in retail. Retailing is one of the oldest professions in the world. However the trade is also one of the most dynamic of businesses. The industry uses technology to the levels next only to NASA. The need to relate to individual customers, understand product, channel and place dynamics and also be commercially astute, makes retail a career for people with needs of high growth and superior rewards needs.”

“I look at retailing as an evergreen business space since it caters to fundamental human needs. It shall not only thrive but only grow with continuous changes in business models suiting the requirements of the ever evolving human species. A well groomed professional who is willing to learn, unlearn and relearn this business space at a certain point in time shall always be invaluable. JIMS Rohini seems to be doing a great job of developing the right professionals towards this end.”

“There has been a sea change in the selling concepts over the last four decades from a 'Kirana' mentality retail has turned to an 'Entrepreneurial' one.The effort that Jagan Institute of Management Studies has taken in introducing and pursuing the retail course PG is commendable for the contribution it has made to the industry in giving its trained retailers. The exposure the students get in form of project work, internship, seminars and inter- collegiate contest help and assist them to become better suited for the industry.”

“These days we find the mass media is full of stories about Amazon, Flipkart etc. What are they part of it is retail sector. Retail is the second largest sector of the Indian economy. Last two decades have seen exponential growth in the organized retail in India. This will require skilled manpower to manage retail operations. I am very bullish about the prospects of Retail in India. Management graduates at the Post graduate level will be required to manage Retail marketing, procurement and manage operations. I would strongly recommend taking up this course to leverage the exciting opportunities in the retailing sector.”

I call retail as a daily business and none of the business can sustain without right mix of talent pool and same is true for retail also. In last few years many of the small and big institutions like JIMS have added retail as a special curriculum in their degree and PG courses .As fast as retail business will grow, in the same pace industry would need right mix of retail talent therefore without leaving any doubt retail leads to a bright & promising career for all incumbents. From the beginners’ position starting as a Trainee one can grow up to a level of Store Manager in the front-end and similarly various position(s) are available in the backend (other than shop floor) including Merchandising, Buying, Planning, Marketing, Supply Chain and Logistics etc.Retail not only has a good career in itself but with close customer interface employees are rather trained more frequently than any other industry which make them prepared for any service business.

"Being a part of Retail Industry for over a decade has given me a lot of confidence & exposure. It has fulfilled my love to see places, meet people & understand their culture. Today, as an entrepreneur, the dynamics of retail give me joy in experimenting with aspects like merchandising, VM, operations, sales & marketing to name a few. I'm extremely thrilled and overjoyed to learn that growing at an annual rate of almost 16%, the Indian Retail Market is expected to touch Rs 600 Lakh Crore by 2017 !
