The Department of Economics at JIMS, Sector 5, Rohini, organized an interactive Career Guidance Workshop on 22nd September 2026 in B 302 for second-year BA (Hons.) Economics students. Held under the department's Mentoring Activities and convened by Dr Vandana Raghava and Ms. Vaishali Jain, the session aimed to encourage students to plan their careers early rather than leaving crucial decisions to the final year.
The workshop opened with an overview of fields allied to economics, highlighting Health Economics, Agricultural Economics and Public Policy as growth areas with strong analytical, research and policy-advisory prospects. Mentors then compared an MA in Economics, suited to research, forecasting, policy institutes, central banking and academia, with an MBA, geared toward management, strategy, consulting and leadership roles.
Considerable attention was given to corporate careers in Financial and Data Analytics. Students learned about the core competencies required, including econometrics, financial modelling and statistical inference, along with the technical toolkit of advanced Excel, SQL, Python or R, and visualization tools such as Power BI and Tableau. The mentors also explained the Indian Economic Service (IES) examination conducted by the UPSC, covering its role, eligibility and preparation roadmap, and outlined the structure of the CAT and other entrance tests, stressing early preparation and mock testing. Requirements for pursuing postgraduate studies abroad were also discussed.
The session concluded with a reminder to break long-term ambitions into consistent, semester-wise milestones that balance technical skills, internships and academic performance.
Students described the workshop as informative and relevant, and said it gave them greater clarity and confidence to begin planning from their second year.
