Career Landscape in Economics: Mentorship Session

Jagan Institute of Management Studies, Sector 5, Rohini, organized an insightful mentorship activity titled “Career Landscape in Economics” on 7 September 2026 for third-year BA (Hons) Economics students. The session was conducted under the Mentoring Activities initiative, with the objective of helping students make informed decisions about their higher education, career pathways, and professional aspirations.

The mentorship session addressed several important questions confronting undergraduate Economics students as they approach graduation. A key focus was the choice between completing a three-year undergraduate programme and pursuing the fourth year. Students were encouraged to evaluate these options in light of their individual academic interests, career goals, and plans for higher education, internships, or employment. The session also explored diverse postgraduate opportunities, including MA Economics, MBA, and other specialized programmes. Through meaningful discussions, students gained a better understanding of how their choice of postgraduate education should align with their long-term professional objectives. Particular emphasis was placed on entrance examinations such as CAT and other relevant postgraduate admission tests, highlighting the importance of beginning preparation early.

Another significant aspect of the mentorship activity was guidance on pursuing higher education abroad. Students were encouraged to research university-specific eligibility requirements, understand academic expectations, and begin building a strong profile during their undergraduate years. The discussion reinforced the value of internships, practical exposure, technical and soft skills, and continuous academic development in preparing for future opportunities. The mentors emphasized that career planning is an ongoing process rather than a decision to be made only at the end of graduation. Students were encouraged to break their long-term aspirations into smaller, achievable goals and adopt a strategic, proactive approach to professional development.

The session received encouraging feedback from the participating students, who found the discussions informative, relevant, and useful in clarifying their academic and career choices. The activity contributed to greater awareness of available opportunities and helped students approach their next steps with increased clarity and confidence. The event was convened by Dr. Bharti Rana, Dr. Shivani Mehta, and Ms. Vaishali Jain, whose efforts contributed to creating a meaningful platform for student mentoring and career guidance. At JIMS, we remain committed to nurturing informed, skilled, and future-ready Economics graduates through engaging academic and mentoring initiatives.
