Expert Talk on Technology Readiness Level (TRL), MRL, IRL, IP Commercialization, Tech-Transfer


The Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) conducted an informative session on “Technology Readiness Levels (TRL), Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRL), Investment Readiness Levels (IRL) & Intellectual Property Commercialization” on 26th February 2026 at JIMS Rohini, Sector – 5, New Delhi. The session was delivered by Ms. Himani Vashisth, who is working as Manager (IP & Technology Officer) and Head-ITTO at the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

Ms. Vashisth explained the significance of TRL in assessing technological maturity, MRL in evaluating manufacturing feasibility, and IRL in determining investment preparedness. The discussion further covered Intellectual Property protection mechanisms, including patents (with foreign filing options), trademarks, and design registration under the Designs Act, 2000. Students were also introduced to the process of technology transfer, the First Examination Report (FER), and the role of key stakeholders and incubation centres in supporting commercialization.

Interactive explanations and practical insights helped students understand how readiness assessment and IP protection together strengthen entrepreneurial ventures. The session successfully enhanced awareness about the complete innovation-to-commercialization pathway and encouraged students to strategically protect and scale their ideas.
