Objective of the Event:
The workshop was designed to inform students and budding entrepreneurs about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and their use in safeguarding innovation and promoting business development.
The workshop concentrated on critical areas of IPR management, especially for start-ups, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs. The goal was to impart hands-on knowledge of legal protection for intellectual property and provide attendees with tools for using IP to achieve business success.
On 27th March 2025, the IIC Student Council hosted a workshop titled ‘Protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) & IP Management for Startups’ at B Building, Room no. B302, starting at 12:00 PM. The session was led by Mr. Deepak Singh.
Mr. Deepak Singh began by stressing the importance of IPR in today’s innovation-driven economy. Drawing from his experience at R.K Dewan & Co., he explained how start-ups often overlook IP protection due to limited resources, leading to vulnerabilities. He outlined practical steps for prioritizing IP registration, conducting patent searches, and avoiding infringement pitfalls.
Case studies of Indian start-ups successfully leveraging IPRs were discussed, demonstrating how patents and trademarks can create revenue streams and deter competitors. Mr. Singh also addressed the role of the Delhi High Court in resolving IP disputes, sharing anecdotes from high-profile cases to illustrate legal nuances.
An interactive segment allowed students to pose questions about balancing IP costs with startup budgets, handling international IP filings, and addressing plagiarism. Mr. Singh emphasized collaboration with legal experts and utilizing government schemes like the “Start-up India Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP)” for cost-effective IP management.
Learning Outcomes: Mr. Deepak Singh, who is a subject matter expert in intellectual property law, held a thought-provoking session on the role of IPRs in today's business environment. He started off by defining the basic concepts of IPR and describing its forms and how and why they play a crucial role in safeguarding innovative and creative ideas.
