MDP on ‘Developing Corporate leaders through Transactional Analysis’


MDP on ‘Developing Corporate leaders throughTransactional Analysis’ was organized by JIMS Rohini on 26th February,2021. The resource persons of the MDP were Dr. Neelam Dhall, Professorand Dean (R&D), JIMS and Prof. S.C. Kapoor, Corporate Consultant andProfessor, JIMS. The session started with the welcome address and felicitationof resource persons by Dr Neha Shukla, Associate Professor, JIMS. The programwas attended by the officials from TATA Power, ROINET Solution and the researchscholars. The program was conducted in three sessions; details of which hasbeen outlined below-

Session1

Prof. S.C. Kapoor conducted the first session on‘The New Leadership – Changing Paradigmsof Leadership & Discovering one’s Leadership Style’. Prof. Kapoorstarted the session by asking a question from the participants as to why theterm used is Leadership and not anything else. This triggered a lot of discussionaround the concept and it was concluded that predominantly leader is the onewho sails the ship; hence the term Leadership is justified. Further, heexplained the meaning of the term - leader and traits of an effective leader.He explained the changing paradigms of leadership through a video clipping ofChak De! India movie depicting the changing paradigms of the leadership stylesof Kabir Khan. After showing the video clipping, Prof. Kapoor explained variousleadership styles played by Kabir Khan in the movie at different point of timewhich left all the participants thinking that how should a good leader behaveand change their leadership style depending upon the circumstances to get thebest out of his followers. He further explained the types of leadership stylesuch as autocratic, democratic, free-rein leadership through various examples. Atthe end of the session, participants were asked to fill a questionnaire whichhelped them discover their dominant leadership style. Overall the session wasquite interactive.

Session2

The second session titled ‘Managing Self for Leading Others- Facets ofTransactional Analysis and Enhancing Interpersonal Relationships through JohariWindow’ was conducted by Dr. Neelam Dhall. She began thesession with one physical exercise where participants were told to imaginethemselves as a free bird with spread arms and flying action. Everyone was toldto think about their goals two years down the line. After this exercise,participants were asked to share their goals, the challenges they were able to foreseeand how they plan to overcome those hindrances. Dr. Neelam further enlightened theparticipants on why managing self is essential for leading others. Later, shediscussed the concept of transactional analysis and three ego states, i.e.Parent, Adult and Child. Thereafter, she explained the types of transactionsnamely- Complimentary, Crossed and Ulterior with the help of movie clippings. Thereafter,she explained the concept of Johari Window and it’s four quadrants i.e. Open,Blind, Hidden and Unknown. Subsequently, through a self-assessmentquestionnaire she helped the participants explore different quadrants of Johariwindow for themselves and also gave insights on how it helps in enhancinginterpersonal relationships. Overall the session was very interesting and insightful.

Session 3

The third session titled- ‘Achieving Excellence through TransactionalAnalysis- Understanding LifePositions & Magic of Strokes for Effective Leadership’ was conducted by Dr. Neelam Dhall.She started the session by explaining the concept of Life Positions and theirimplications on interpersonal relationships at workplace. She recommendedparticipants to adopt the ideal life position i.e. “I am OK, You are OK”. Sheemphasized this is the most healthy life position and people with this life positionare able to manage their relationships constructively. Thereafter, shediscussed the magic of strokes for effective leadership. Towards the end of thesession, a team activity was conducted to help participants understand variousconcepts of team effectiveness such as decision-making, risk-taking,coordination, leadership style, strokes and efficient resource managementthrough experiential learning. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by theparticipants all through the activity was commendable.

Session 4

The fourth session titled-Attaining Team Effectiveness through SMART resolution of  Conflicts’ was conducted by Prof. S.C. Kapoor. He started the session by explaining the concept ofConflict and potential reasons for it’s emergence. Further, he discussed thefive conflict resolution styles and recommended ‘Collaborating style’ as the healthiest style for conflictresolution as it leads to a win-win situation for both the parties. Thereafter,Prof. Kapoor showed a video clipping from the movie “Border” to explain therole and style of a leader in different conflict situations. Prof. Kapoor concludedthe session by emphasizing that a leader must behave in accordance with situationalrequirements.

The valediction speech was given by Dr. PoojaJain, Director (JIMS). Thereafter, certificates were distributed amongst theparticipants and the programme concluded with a group photograph. Overall, theprogramme was highly appreciated by the participants who showed their eagernessto attend such programmes in future as well.
