MDP on Managing Self for Leading Others and Achieving Excellence through Emotional Intelligence


MDP was organized on ‘Managing Self for Leading Others and Achieving Excellence through Emotional Intelligence’ for Punjab & Sind Bank officials from 18th February,2020 to 22nd February, 2020 at JIMS, Rohini. The key resource persons for the MDP were Prof. S.C. Kapoor, Dr. Neelam Dhall and Dr. Pratima Daipuria. Dr. Sumesh Raizada, initiated the programme by welcoming the participants and later introduced the resource persons. Thereafter, Dr. Pooja Jain, Director, JIMS gave a welcome address and familiarized the participants with the theme of the MDP. The MDP was conducted in three different sessions, details of which have been outlined below:

Session-1

The New Leadership

Prof. S.C Kapoor started the session by explaining the concept, dimensions and significance of leadership. Later, he discussed styles of leadership- namely Autocratic, Democratic and Free-Rein. Thereafter, he deliberated on the leadership style of Lord Krishna and his unique attributes that made him a good leader. To make the session more interactive, he talked about the movie ‘Chak De India’ and discussed the strategies of a good leader by discussing different incidents from the movie. Later, participants were given self-assessment questionnaire pertaining to leadership styles, which was followed by a discussion. Prof. Kapoor concluded the session with a clipping from the movie ‘Border’ which highlighted various facets of leadership.

Session-2

Managing Self for Leading Others

Dr. Neelam Dhall started the session with a warm-up exercise and everyone participated in it enthusiastically. Thereafter, she steered the session by highlighting ‘poor communication’ and ‘failure in building relationship’ as the two major reasons for a leader’s failure. In this context, she discussed the concept of Johari Window at length and explained how it is a useful tool for improving self-awareness and improving interpersonal relationships. Later, she explained how interpersonal relationships can be enhanced through transactional analysis. Subsequently, she explained three ego states and types of transactions through different movie clippings. During the session, self-assessment tests were conducted which not only helped the participants identify different aspects of their personality but also made them understand the nuances of verbal transactions. She concluded her session with an inspirational video displaying the whole gamut of leadership.

Session-3 

Achieving Excellence through Emotional Intelligence 

Dr. Pratima Daipuria initiated the session by explaining the concept of emotional intelligence and its dimensions namely- self-awareness, self-management, managing emotions, self-motivation, social awareness and relationship management. Thereafter, she discussed the significance of emotional intelligence at workplace by highlighting that lack of emotional intelligence is one of the major reasons for losing customers and career derailment. She further gave an understanding of different human emotions such as fear, sadness, surprise, anger, happiness and asked the participants to dedicate two songs each on different emotions. Everyone participated in this exercise actively and gave their best to match with the given emotions. She concluded the session by highlighting the domains of emotional intelligence and it’s competencies.

The programme concluded with distribution of certificates to participants and vote of thanks. Overall, the MDP was well appreciated by the officers of Punjab & Sind Bank.
