One Week Short Term Training Program On Decision Making Using Data Analysis

28th September

STTP began with the inaugural address by Dr.Pooja Jain, Director, JIMS, Rohini, Delhi. She welcomed the participants and discussed about the need and importance of research for the faculty, nowadays. She gave a brief overview ofthe topics to be covered during the one week of training program.

Technical Sessions for day 1 covered the Basics of Research, Introduction and Background of R Software, its interface, R Console, Installing R for Windows, etc.  The Speaker , Mr. Saurabh Aggarwal explained that how software R can be used in research and data analysis. He told participants how to work on R, by demonstrating on R console. Basic programming was explained for the given data and participants were asked to do hands on practice through exercises which were given in between. Assignment was given to the participants for practice.

29th September

Mr.Saurabh Aggarwal reviewed the previous day’s assignment and resolved the queries. He familiarised them with the data structures, how to create vectors, matrices, arrays, lists and data frames. Later on, after solving the doubts, he moved to the topic of hypothesis testing with practical examples. Testing  of  hypothesis through R, for various types of data was also explained and participants were asked to do the coding. Assignment was given for the practice

30th September

Session started with the review of previous day’s queries and assignment related issues. Later, speaker explained the theoretical aspects of Linear Regression basics and how to do the same in R with the provided data set. After completion of Linear Regression, he explained and demonstrated the Factor Analysis in R forthe given data set. Overall the session was very insightful and participantshad so much to take away.

1st October

Session-I began with the address of guest speaker, Dr.R.K Singh, Dean, Department of Commerce, DSE, University of Delhi. He deliberated on the importance of Qualitative research and its various aspects. He explained that just gathering of information is not research and also any decision based on facts alone is not a research or transportation of facts from one place to another in the strict regimen of research also is not called as research. Research is systematic collection and analysis of information in order to understand the phenomenon about which one has shown interest. He told that the purpose of research is to create knowledge, to add something to the existing knowledgebase and discovery. Based on research problem, strategies for research needs to be decided and based on strategies tactics of the research should be decided. He also handled the queries from the participants in between his session and after.

Later in the second session of the day, Dr.H.K.Dangi covered the topics related to identification of Research problem and issues of like scale. He discussed with the participants the various issues that come up during the qualitative data collection and analysis. Some key learning that participants got during the sessions were that when there is no clarity on the research problem or the research problem is vaguely defined, it is better to opt for the exploratory research. Also, postCOVID-19 experimental research design is going to be more relevant. There are number of factors to be considered while selecting a research problem for example: topic should be of interest, it should be original, data should be available, etc.

2nd October

The sessions for the day were devoted to qualitative data analysis through NVivo.Dr. Dangi helped the participants in installing NVivo. He explained thematic analysis and content analysis is and how it can be used in qualitative research.Participants were demonstrated as to how to import document to NVivo, word cloud can be formed from a document in NVivo and how to exclude words from word cloud. Participants also created tree map and did cluster analysis using NVivo.Key learnings for the day, for the participants were, Text search in document, Sentiment analysis/ opinion analysis and how it can be used in research through NVivo, Preparation of node matrix and charts, Import of image and audio to NVivo and its content analysis using NVivo, Transfer/ import of article from internet in the form of PDF to NVivo using NCapture and creation of its wordcloud, etc.

3rd October

The speaker covered qualitative data analysis using Tableau and R. Participants learnt as to how to import excel file to tableau, do systematic review of literature using tableau, create geographical map, forecast on the basis oftime series or past trend, develop a story using tableau and conduct granular analysis in tableau.

Participants were demonstrated as to how to conduct text mining using R. Key learnings were, creation of word cloud, tree map, cluster analysis using R as well as sentiment analysis using R, transfer/ import of PDF to R and then creation of word cloud, tree map and cluster analysis.

At the close of the last session, an online assessment was conducted for the participants to evaluate them on their leanings during the one week of STTP.

The STTP concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Dr.Sumesh Raizada, Coordinator, who thanked the participants for their active involvement. He expressed his gratitude to the speakers for conducting the sessions so well. He also acknowledged the support and motivation provided by the JIMS’ management, IT staff and session coordinators, in the successful conduct of the STTP.
